Twitter, like all mainstream social networks, is constantly evolving. It’s not unusual to check your newsfeed or upload a photo and see that something’s changed - even if you can’t quite put your finger on what it is straight away.

Twitter has made several of these minor tweaks recently, which stand to make the user experience smoother. But the changes can also help avid social networkers, PRs and social media agencies who use Twitter to engage with key contacts. Here’s how to use them to your advantage:

Send photos by DM

You can now share and view photos by direct message on your phone or at Twitter.com. If you’re getting in touch with bloggers or useful contacts via Twitter, why not get straight to the point and include an image of the product or brand you’re promoting? Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words!

Keep an eye on key contacts

Android users can now receive mobile notifications when certain users tweet – great if you’re keeping eye on someone you’d like to help promote your brand. Just view their profile and tap the star icon to set up notifications and be the first to reply, re-tweet or get in touch.

Never miss a DM

It’s now much easier to spot a DM thanks to a new icon on the top navigation bar. This is particularly useful if you use Twitter to request contact details from users, or contact competition winners, and avoids any unintentional snubs.
